This artificial reef is composed of large concrete structures known as erojacks. They are used to protect shorelines from wave action. When placed parallel to oncoming waves, they serve as wave breakers.When placed perpendicular to the beach and the direction of oncoming waves, they prevent erosion caused by long-shore waves.

You will enter through Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park entrance near Dania Beach pier. You will need to pay a park fee of $6.
- If you park near Dania Beach, you will have a very long walk of 15 minutes or longer (not recommended) and you will have to pay more for parking (about $5 per hour).
Drive about half a mile (800m) and park in the parking lot on the right side. If you get to the nature trail, you went too far.
Follow the walking path and cross over Whiskey Creek towards the beach.
Upon entering the beach area, walk to your left and look for the red sign with JAX on top (between the two caution flags) and find a spot to place your items on the beach before you enter.
There are three reef systems in the park
- The closest is about 300 yards (100m) off shore. This is where you should snorkel.
- The second one is close to a half-mile off shore
- The last is over 2 miles out.
